The Annunciation

The Archangel Gabriel appears throughout the sacred texts in the Abrahamic tradition. To announce the birth of St. John the Baptist; to announce the birth of Christ; and finally, appearing to the Prophet Mohammed to reveal the Quran in the Islamic tradition. All these announced the birth of a new era in history. Here, I take this theme of annunciation to symbolize the birth of an emerging consciousness that recognizes our interconnectedness in the web of Creation. The angel is depicted as female, or Gabriella, representative of the sacred feminine.

The Despacho

The despacho is an ancient ceremony performed in the Andes. These are offerings to Pachamama (Mother Earth) or an Apus (mountain spirit). The shell in the center represents the feminine and the cross represents the masculine. Cocoa leaves, or kintus, are central to the ceremony and additional items might include money, ribbons, alcohol, or a llama fetus. Here, I chose items at the local market and created the despacho which I then painted as an offering to the healing of the Earth. Once complete, the despacho is folded and the bundle is either buried or burned.

Kintu Offering

A kintu is three cocoa leaves placed together in this way. We blow our spirit into the kintu and say prayers before placing them as an offering to Pachamama or an Apus (mountain). This piece symbolizes an offering for the Apus Wakay Wilka as seen from the train to Machu Picchu.

The Eagle and The Condor

Inspired by the sacred waters at Tipon and the Inka cross, this painting symbolizes the Eagle and the Condor flying together again as foretold in the ancient prophecy.

Gypsy Seer is Gayle's spirit name. She asked that I paint whatever came through me. Drawing on her deep connection to the Earth, the forest, her passion for dancing, and her spirit animals, this is what came forward during my painting sessions.
